PROJECT 1: Models and Tattoos: Expression through Design Elements

and Principles

INTRODUCTION

Design Elements and Principles are all around us. It is a necessary process needed in design where every art student should know of. This process is the start of every design we have today.

TASKS

For this assignment, we were asked to design 6 models following with it's tattoo stamps based on the 5 elements- Materials, Line, Shape, Mass and Space. Along with the 16 Principles- Balance, Connection, Contrast, Emphasis, Form, Groping, Imagery, Meaning, Symbolism, Pattern, Placement, Proportion, Rhythm, Scale, Unity and Variety. These models were to have a dimension of 100mm x 100mm x 100mm. At the end of this assignment we had a verbal presentation to relate our ideas and concepts towards our assigned lecturer.

FINAL OUTCOME

MODEL 1

- PROPORTION AND SPACE -

For this model, I chose to do a combination of proportion and space. Where from the model you can see that they are 2 main scales of  different sizes. One big and the other small. That was used as the walls to create the space

MODEL 2

- CONTRAST AND MATERIALS -

For this model, I chose to do a combination of contrast and materials. Where at the back I've used grey boards to create straight vertical lines while in the front you can see that the sharp triangles are arranged in a random order compared to the grey-board. to further emphasize on contrast 2 very different materials were used, perspex and grey-board with different solidity to further emphasize of contrasting elements.

MODEL 3

- EMPHASIS AND SHAPE -

For this model, I chose to do a combination of emphasis and shape. Here, you can see that the 2 main shapes are squares and triangles. Where a greater emphasis is put into the center being the triangles from the front view however, towards the side view, the emphasis is concentrated more on the squares. The squares actually act as a shield like form protecting the center piece, being the triangles.

MODEL 4

- BALANCE AND LINE -

For this model, I chose to do a combination of balance and line. The type of balance I've chosen is asymmetrical balance. Where from the center point, you can see that there are not the same however, by mass they are balanced. Here, I've also played with the thickness of lines to create more balance in the models design and intention.

MODEL 5

- VARIETY AND MASS -

For this model, I chose to do a combination of variety and mass. Where in this model there is a usage of many different materials to emphasize on variety as well as a number of shapes and line thickness. However, the main materials used are grey-boards followed by modelling board, translucent perspex and clear perspex. Where there is a huge range of solidity and mass in the materials itself to further emphasize on mass.

MODEL 6

- RHYTHM AND LINE -

For my last model, I chose to do a combination of rhythm and line. Throughout the entire model there a variety of rhythmic movements going on.  In the inside which is the base, the rhythmic movement going on is more of a wave-like rhythm where as at the top the rhythmic movement s going from one end to the other and lastly, the exterior rhythm is moving from top to bottom vice versa. Throughout the entire model, only lines are used to further emphasize on the rhythmic movements in the model to show that fluidity.

REFLECTION & TGC's

From this assignment, I've learned more about the design principles and elements and have realized that my thinking and problem solving has improved as throughout the entire process, there were certain obstacles which occurred in preventing me from achieving my desired outcome. However, after modifying and accommodating to the problems, I had managed to solve the issue. Besides that, my time management has improved since we were allocated very little time to complete this assignment.
